Does anyone know of any ads featuring Betty besides the ones I mentioned featuring the egg shampoo and Parker Pens? What else did she lend her name to?

May I suggest a thread something like "Signs of the times...???" Idea would be to create a school curriculum in which the various novels, writings..., would be seen as evocative of their era and suitable for enrichment readings in US history classes about the period(s)? People could select excerpts as a departure point and suggest the much-loved "questions at end of chapter" as essay topics to be based on further research coupled with conversations with elderly relatives who may remember all or part of those times. Bring it all alive! (Done well, it could be sold to schools inexpensively and the receipts used to support this site into the future.) Any retired teachers out there?

Gee, Frank ... I'm thinking a discussion amongst the members, about Betty's life and family. I mean, do schools even bother with checking forum blogs on literary web site? I've never heard of it if they do. ??

I agree Deb. With more and more students enrolling teachers have little time to spend checking forum blogs. In fact, at my school we are forbidden to cite fron a blog.

John and Debbie, I went through some of my old Betty items and there was the Crosley ad! It's for a Shelvadore model. Apparently, it was just aces at keeping eggs at the right temperature!

LOL Suz - Glad you found the ad. I don't think there were any others, but I DO have an ad featuring Louise Allbritton, who played Harriet Putnam in the movie version. The ad is something farm-related. I'll have to find it - if you'd like a copy. ??

Have no idea where to put this, so it goes here, where we were discussing things for sale. There are some very interesting pictures of Betty and Don on eBay right now. Several of them are from the trial and show pictures of the Bishop family, the man who some thought was the "Raleigh Man", and of the man who said he was the character called Crowbar. Fun to see their faces. Some of these photos have newspaper clippings on the back and they make interesting reading. There are several of Betty and her family which I have not seen before.

Thankyou for info about the ebay photos. I found the one with Betty getting ready for an interview but not the others about the Bishop trial, maybe I am not using the correct search terms.

Rick, I can see that you posted questions about photos of the Bards, but I cannot find your post under Discussions. When I click on the "read more" link under your post on the home page, I get some kind of odd page where I can post anonymously. So I'm going to assume that your whole post is about Bard photos and respond this way: there's a photo on eBay of Betty and the girls doing dishes, taken from outside and looking in through their kitchen window on Vashon. Cleve is sitting at a table in the background. The best place to see photos of Sydney is in that Life magazine article done when everyone was living on Vashon. There are photos of Mary around; I'm trying to think where I've seen them. Some are on this site. I have never seen a photo of Alison or Dede. I've always wondered what Darsie Bard, Betty's father, looked like. There must be early photos of him around somewhere. He died so young, it's possible that the family thought they had plenty of time to sit for a photographic portrait and just never had one made. At the time they were living in the Seattle in the former Danish consul's house, they had the money to have a photo taken. Later, after Darsie's death, they struggled financially. Maybe someone can remind me where I've seen Mary's photos.

@ Rick... Only picture i have is of her sister Dede. Unlike Mary and Betty, the rest of the fmily eluded publicity.

ps: i forgot..... thanks for the mention Suz.... I do have a pictyure of Darsie bard. Oh don't trust the picture that is currculating that is "supposed" to be Gammy... it is not her.

Just finished Egg again, followed by Blanche Caffiere's book on her life and connection with the Bards, and now it's on to Plague. This time with Egg, I noticed more of the awkward spots, where either the editing was a little spotty, or I just didn't understand connections. I would have to go back now and locate those spots to give specific examples. I would love to get my hands on some of the notes Betty made for the book she was supposed to have started in Carmel, before she became ill. I understand the University of Washington might have some of her papers archived. That would be a treasure trove, wouldn't it?
