Jodee Fenton has provided a link to the Book Club of Washington's publication of a story Betty wrote prior to Egg. It was published in Town Crier magazine and has been bound into what they're calling a 'chapbook'. Paula Becker discovered it while doing her sleuthing through the realms of research. I'm ordering today and am really excited to read something new by Betty. Thank you, Paula, Jodee.....and Betty.
Debbie, I still haven't mailed the form. No excuses, just keep putting it aside in favor of other things which keep jumping up at me....mostly the four-footed rescues we foster for our local humane society.
Since the Town Crier was published between 1912 and 1937, it is likely that Betty used her maiden name Bard. There may also be a public domain issue involved here.
Well, I'm sure Betty (and Margar) would approve, Suz. They were dog and cat lovers, as you know.
The book is a bit pricey, but I think I'll see if Paula Becker would help us out, maybe some excerpts or ?? She is a Betty-phile, like the rest of us. :-)
I would love to have a copy. Since these short were published in the Town Crier and, the Seattle library has copies; I may contact them to see if I get them to sent me copies. People are usually very helpful when you explain what you are doing and, why you are doing it.
What has happened to this site? I thought a new site was being built months ago? Also the Betty MacDonald Facebook has seemed to have vanished. Has Betty gone underground?
The site seems to be very quiet. Anyway I have obtained a copy of Paula Becker's book and have read about half of it. Interesting read so far with quite a bit of background about Betty's real life compared to what she wrote in her books.
I have just finished reading "Looking for Betty MacDonald" and really enjoyed it. It was very well researched and referenced. It provides some insight into the real Betty and her family in contrast to that portrayed in her books. Paula was given access to a lot of Betty's papers still retained by her family so was able to include a lot of material which was new.
